The Junior Youth Club has been running throughout 2008-9 every Friday from 6-7.30pm. We have a good weekly attendance of 35-50 children. The children have enjoyed many craft, cooking and games activities as well as the various sports on offer in the sports hall. This year we have tried to encourage the older children to take on some leadership roles and so have been pleased when they have suggested activities and helped younger children to settle into the club.
We have a core team of four volunteers who are committed to attend every week. In addition to this there are five other volunteers who support us on a rota system. We currently have no parents of children from the local area who are volunteers as they have been unwilling to commit for more than a few weeks. However, they will gladly support us on any trips. We have also had several students who have been part of the team for several sessions but due to study commitments have been unable to volunteer for a sustained period. In addition to this we have two young leaders who are both 15 years old. They help at the Youth Club on a weekly basis and are beginning to show signs of good leadership potential. We continue to ask members of the local community and advertise with local universities as we would like to expand our team of helpers.
In December 2008 the children asked if they could perform a Christmas play. We decided to do this in the form of a pantomime and then held a table-top sale afterward. This was very successful and well supported by the community.
During the summer holidays the Junior Youth Club has been open on a Tuesday afternoon from 2-4pm. We have had an average of 18 children attending and have provided activities similar to those on a Friday session. We applied for a grant for the Community Foundation and were awarded £365 so we are taking the children to Wet ‘N’ Wild and buying some resources to use in the Youth Club.
